Gameday Rituals of Famous NBA Basketball Stars

Famous Pregame Rituals for Good Luck

There are many famous pregame rituals for good luck. For example, Michael Jordan would always make sure to have his North Carolina shorts on before playing. Kobe Bryant would always shoot two free throws before the game started. And LeBron James famously chalk-toss before every game.

What sort of rituals do NBA basketball stars have to ensure they have a good game?

1. LeBron James – Chalk-Toss

LeBron James started his famous pregame “chalk-toss” when he played in Cleveland. He copied the ritual from Michael Jordan who used to playfully throw chalk in the broadcasters’ faces.

2. Shaquille O’Neal – Pretend Bowling

Before each game, Shaq pretended to bowl in the locker room with his teammates.

3. Monta Ellis – Wax Hands

To help his dunking ability, Monta Ellis dips his hands in warm wax which he peels off before a game. He believes it makes his hands more smooth and helps him dunk the ball better.

4. Kyrie Irving – The Flat Earth Society

Kyrie Irving is one of the most famous basketball players in the world, and he also happens to believe in the flat earth theory. He has said that he thinks the earth is actually a disc, and not a globe. Irving is noted for his strange ritual of smudging the court on game day. He burns sage and walks around the court, smudging the air. When asked about the ritual, he said it was from native tribes that use sage to cleanse the energy.

5. Russell Westbrook – The Superstitious One

Russell Westbrook, point guard for Oklahoma City Thunder, is one of the most superstitious players in the NBA. He does all sorts of strange dances and handshakes with teammates on game day to bring good luck.

6. Dwyane Wade – The Family Man

Dwyane Wade is one of the most well-known players in the NBA, and he’s also one of the most family oriented. He always makes sure to spend time with his wife and kids before every game.

Wade is most noted for his pregame pull-ups by hanging from the basketball rim. Also, his favorite “lucky” number is No. 3. He wears No. 3 for the Miami Heat. He chews three pieces of gum and drinks three bottles of Gatorade during the game.

7. Steph Curry – The Sprinter

Steph Curry is one of the best point guards in NBA history, and has won the Player of the Year Award. Before each game, he sprints up and down the court.

8. Kevin Durant – The Meditating One

Kevin Durant is one of the best scorers in the NBA, and he’s also one of the most introspective players in the league. He always takes time to meditate before every game. And as part of his pregame ritual, he always makes sure to visualize himself making all of his shots. He believes that this helps him to stay calm and focused during the game.

These are just a few of the famous pre-game rituals for good luck that NBA players use. Do any of these rituals work for the players? We’ll never know for sure.
